High blood pressure symptoms - High blood pressure treatment
Can blood pressure tablets cause bad dreams?
Ever since my doctor started me on atenolol I’ve been having the most vivid dreams you can ever imagine. Not always bad I have to say - but the intensity of them is sometimes overwhelming.
Is it the tablets. Does atenolol cause bad dreams - or could it be the blood pressure problem itself.
Certainly seems to have started since the drugs were changed.
Has anyone else had bad dreams with blood pressure tablets?
Welcome to The Pressure Point.
My name is Doctor Gordon Cameron and I'm a doctor based in Edinburgh, Scotland. I specialize in blood pressure treatment for two reasons:
Firstly - I see many thousands of people with the condition each year and I understand the problems that high blood pressure and its treatment can cause.
Secondly, I suffer from raised BP myself and take treatment every day so I really do understand the problems from both sides of the equation. I've taken pretty much every medication on the market at one time or other, and have used or tried most of the natural remedies and cures.
Join me as we share blood pressure experiences and find a way to keep you healthy and well.
Is it ok to take atenolol 50 mg daily at the same time taking simvastatin 40 mg daily to lower cholesterol?

I’m on 80mg Propranolol (beta blockers) and regularly get horrific nightmares and have no comprehension of reality when I awake from them. They can surpress emotional trauma memories in lab conditions but I have found the opposite to be true.
If this becomes too much speak to your doc and ask for soluable medication as they seem to be kinder to REM sleep sufferers.

I have had hypertension for 4 years. I take Lisinopril 10 mg a day. since last year, atenolol 25-50 mg is added. I take both in the evening. I have experienced almost nightly dream to nightmare with high suspense, running away from dangers , unpleasant environments. I often check my pause which is normal when I wake up from dreams. I want to know why and any reports in medical literature.

i’m on 80mg of propanolol, for familial tremor, i have been on them for about a month, and last night, i had my 1st horrific nightmare, so much so, when i woke up, i dare not go back to sleep, and have been crying for most of the morning. i’m a 26 year old female, and i rely on the tabs to keep my shaking at bay, but after last night, am seriously considering going to see my doc. he did warn me, that propanolol will give me nightmares, as it enters the brain, and kinda interferes, but thats what its meant to do, not sure its worth it. i was taking atenolol 25mg for a year, and never had a problem with them, apart from they didn’t really stop my shaking any. just hope there is another beta-blocker i can use, otherwise i will be a hermit for the rest of life, as i hate when people point out my shaking, fingers crossed.

My doctor gave me 25mg tablets of atenolol, I’ve been breaking the tablets in half. My blood pressure has come down and I feel much better during the day, but the problem is at night.
These dreams bother me a lot, I wake up feeling agitated and tired. Sometimes the dreams seem so real.
