Can blood pressure cause me to have joint and muscle pains?

I’m on medication and my BP control is good at the moment but I seem to be getting stiff and painful joints all the time at present.

Will high blood pressure on it’s own cause me to develop pains in the joints - or is it my blood pressure meds that’s doing it?

I asked my doctor and he said that he didn’t think there was a connection but when I read the leaflets in the medication package two of them do say that joint pains or muscle pains can arise.

What should i do?

Hi

I think it’s more likely to be the case that your medications are causing joint pains.

High or low blood pressure are not usually reasons to have joint pains. Sometimes blood problems with the sodium or the potassium levels can trigger joint or muscle symptoms.

You should see your doctor to have this checked out.

I was so pleased to read your question and answer as I thought I was going mad. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure about twelve months ago. My reading was and still is after various tablets, 179 over 97. about 6 months ago my tablets were increased fron 15g to100g. Three days later my legs started to swell as did my fingers. I also started to get pains in my knees on bending. I went back to my doctor who said it was because my body was ajusting. Iwent back again three weeks later, I couldn’t stand the pain anymore. It was another doctor who changed me to another tablet, on a lower dose 2.5g. the swelling went down, but the pain is still there. I can no longer bend to the floor and am not sure how long I can keep my job. I work as a nursery nurse. I dont know wether to stop medication, as in the time I have been on medication, my blood pressure hasn’t been reduced at all.

I’ve has this problem too.
A long-term arthritis sufferer, my arthritis meds completely controlled my joint pains for years. I was diagnosed with hypertension and put onto Perindopril (2 at first ,then 4mg per day). Within a few weeks I noticed what I assumed to be arthritis pains returning. Like Alison, my GP sugested there was no known correlation between joint issues and my BP meds and to stick with it (or switch to another BP drug). After 6 months of steadily increasing pain, I took myself off the Perindopril. All the pain stopped in the first 2 weeks.
I’m looking into natural alternatives now, so I’d be interested in any success anyone’s found with non-parmaceutical treatments.
