Magnesium supplement lower blood pressure

Posted by: Marjory In: High blood pressure

Hello again - welcome back to The Pressure Point. Don't forget that you can ask your own questions and see it appear on the site - just use the button top left and follow the instructions. Thanks for visiting .... !

I’m looking for a natural way to lower blood pressure and I read in a magazine that magnesium supplements in the diet can lower blood pressure levels.

Is this true?

How much magnesium should I take to get benefit? Will magnesium interfere with any other medication that I am already taking?

Can I buy magnesium supplements online or do I just get them from a local pharmacy?

Thanks
Marjory

Hi Marjory

Yes - there is quite a lot of good evidence now that magnesium supplements can lower your blood pressure levels.

The dose that works for most people is one tablet or capsule twice a day.

There are a few rare medical conditions where taking extra magnesium is not advised but they are pretty few and far between. If in doubt then you should speak to your doctor about it.

I would estimate that you might be able to reduce your blood pressure levels by about 10 on the systolic scale if you start taking magnesium regularly.

Ok, so magnesium can lower blood pressure. Since there are several magnesium combos, which magnesium supplement works the most effectively? How much do you take?

Hi Marjory,

nice question, magnesium can definately help your situation, you might like to try it in combination with Fish Oil, L-Carnitine, Coenzyme Q10 and Pomegranate.

if you are in new zealand a good place to get it would be at

otherwise google it and you should be presented with some good options, the brand I recommend is Solgar.
