I am female 55yrs old,5 0kg, 1.70m, - cholesterol etc all low to normal, non smoker, no other health problems, take exercise, good diet etc - have suffered from HPB for 1 year. Medictions have proved difficult because of side effects and my reluctance to take long term. I have suceeded in keeping BP under control for 4 months, then lost control last month when it got a bit high, returned to Dr and got Nebilet which I have been taking, and everthing is now under control again. I would like to control my BP myself with diet etc and if things get out of control I can thole taking mediction for a short while to get the BP down. Is this an Ok approach? Can I do it by myself ? What is the downside? Is it better than just not taking any medication ? I appreciate that the prefered approach is daily medication, but I am avoiding this.

I recently was experiencing big drops in my blood pressure. My baseline blood pressure is low about 90/60 — I was taking about 500mg of magnesium as part of a calcium/magnesium supplement. I was also taking an additional 150 - 250 mg of magnesium. I noticed on days when the magnesium dose was higher, my blood pressure would plumit - I got readings in the 80’s over 40’s once I recovered enough to operate the blood pressure monitor (I got extremely light headed and weak, and then my heart would start to race). My doctor didn’t think much of my magnesium theory. However, all the heart tests he did showed that I am perfectly healthy 43 year old female; and he couldn’t account for the drop. Is it possible the magnesium was causing my blood pressure to drop? and since my base line is already relatively low, a little bit lower can cause a big difference?? please let me know your thoughts - it’s scary to feel like everything is draining out of you and not know why. In the meantime, I’m not taking magnesium, but need the cal/mag for my bones and don’t know how to resolve this.

My husband is taking threee medications for his high blood pressure: caduet 10-20mg(for cholorestoral also), atenol 25mg and hydroclorothiazide 12.5mg.
He complains of always being tired. I just wonder if all these combinations could play a part in him not feeling well.

Do you need to avoid being out in the sun much when you have high blood pressure ?

I have chronic pains in joints and muscles from all BP_ medication to the point I can hardly walk. If I try to come off meds. within a couple of days I have no energy and have massive jerks and spasms and terrible chest pressure. Any ideas?

I recently was admitted to hosp. in Australia with Heart Block?? on return to u.k. my G.P. states it was a faint due to Low B/P and states I must :-
1. Loose the extra weight i have gained .
2. If attack re-occurs -Cross legs and tighten hand repeatedly to increase blood flow.
But he assures me it’s not life threatening. Can I believe him ? It certainly leaves lots of questions. I do have occasional dizzy spells with no obvious sign or reason before hand, i.e. no sudden getting up or exertion in any way. A Herbalist friend offered me Ginseng as an alternative to relieve tiedness but I am reluctant to take him up. What advice can you give? will loosing weight improve my low blood pressure condition?

Hi I have been on medication to lower my blood pressure for around 6 months but i want to stop as i dont think i need it.

can i just stop i monitor my bp at home on a 2 week basis and it is alway around 129 / 80 somtimes it shoots up to 140 / 90, but to be fair i do drink a bottle of wine per day, i know thats far to much, but i like it and dont really want to stop i enjoy a few glasses of wine after work, the high blood pressure is pure stress related as i run my own business

I know that eating more fruit and vegetables is good for you but does anyone actually have a list of fruits and vegetables that lower blood pressure.

I’m thinking of things like tomatoes and beetroot - I’ve read that both of them are good at lowering blood pressure levels but I’m sure their must be more than that.

Can anyone give - or point a link to - a fuller list of all the fruits and vegetables that are good for you if you have problems with high blood pressure.

I want to experiment to see if adding certain fruits and vegetables can reduce blood pressure levels

OK

Can anyone help me out to understand this better?

I know that countries like Spain and Greece seem to have less health problems and I’ve read that it’s due to the mediterranean diet. I also heard from my doctor that the good bits are the red wine and the olive oil. And also not too much salt in the food.

Is this true?

I would like to use more olive oil but surely having fried food is not what we are supposed to be doing?

Am I missing the point about the connection between olive oil and high blood pressure? Should I just take some from a spoon every day?

Is it fish oil or olive oil thats supposed to be the most helpful.

Please help - I’m getting very confused about all of this stuff

Thanks … Jess x

I love to eat salty peanuts but is it going to cause problems with my blood pressure?

Surely peanuts are good for me - high natural fats and the salt level doesn’t seem all that high really.

If I look after my blood pressure in other ways is it OK to keep eating peanuts? I heard that the protein content in peanuts is a good way of getting energy. I always take the dry roasted ones so I dont get too much fat added

Welcome to The Pressure Point.

My name is Doctor Gordon Cameron and I'm a doctor based in Edinburgh, Scotland. I specialize in blood pressure treatment for two reasons:

Firstly - I see many thousands of people with the condition each year and I understand the problems that high blood pressure and its treatment can cause.

Secondly, I suffer from raised BP myself and take treatment every day so I really do understand the problems from both sides of the equation. I've taken pretty much every medication on the market at one time or other, and have used or tried most of the natural remedies and cures.
